The film part of Orpheus charts a journey of artistic and self-discovery through the underworld, with characters from the original Greek myths re-cast.
Prometheus
From the original myth we took the idea of Prometheus as suffering outcast, who has achieved something great but is unappreciated.
In our production Prometheus becomes the radical avant-garde artist whose works have artistic credibility, but who has been rejected by the public. The idea was to have Prometheus surrounded by people who are happy in themselves but oblivious to his presence. For his speech we took inspiration from the prose of Samuel Beckett and, with the abrupt changes of subject and violent imagery, 4:48 Psychosis by Sarah Kane. |
The Furies
For the Furies, mythological manifestations of vengeance and the anger of the dead, we decided to take our character into his subconscious and a confrontation with his own deepest anxieties, particularly those concerning his relationship with his wife. We decided to do this by creating a surreal party scene in which characters from the stage performance in the first act reappeared or were re-worked into different figures of the imagination.
